No matter how hard I try with all my other blog posts, the Expat Series is the one that keeps people coming back over and over! LOL. I get it, it’s what you really want to know about! As a South African in Canada, we have started a new life since moving here and my aim with this blog is to share that with you: the good, the bad, and the ugly. If I can help anyone through the struggle or help a soon-to-be-expat prepare for this life-changing event, I’ll be happy!

Moving to Canada is TOUGH! Here's the Guide How-To: Click To Tweet

It Started With REAL THIS Post:

Probably the most real post I’ve ever written, so no wonder it took off. Initially, I wrote it just for myself, to explain in words how I was feeling on a  day to day basis after moving to Canada. I was reaaally struggling. I went through days of just crying, unable to leave the house, barely able to muster up energy to clean the house or cook dinner. Once I got through it, I realised that others are probably experiencing the same thing — and clearly they were. It went viral overnight because people shared it among themselves on Facebook Groups predominantly for South Africans in Canada, commenting about how “I hit the nail on the head”. Yup, immigrating is not easy… so before you do it, know these things:

As a Result, I got SO Many Questions:

I feel like I have to start off every reply with, “I’m no expert, but…” because it’s true — I’m not an Immigration Law expert, I don’t know everything about living in Canada in general and I can’t see the future in terms of whether you will enjoy living here either. All I can do is guide you and give you MY experience: the good, the bad and the ugly. The only reason I throw that caveat out there because I would hate to bear the responsibility of your happiness over probably the biggest life decision ever. Treat it as such and research the hell out of everything yourself, but here are some of the answers I’ve shared:

So… Any Regrets?

Because I was SO real in that initial post, some people wondered if I had any regrets. And I’m not surprised, it sounds more scary than positive when you read that post. But you really have to read it in the context of when it was written — that initial year of adjusting is tough. And yes, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. At least there was for me and I wrote all about why here:

Things To Help You Adjust:

There were a lot of things that really helped me settle in. Getting a job or finding a purpose was the main one! And secondly, travel, because that is our favourite thing to do! It’s the reason this blog was even started so if you’re interested about reading more of our travels, check out this round-up post of where we’ve travelled since moving here. I also wrote about a few more things that helped me adjust here.

Another Real Post: South Africa and I Have Grown Apart

On a recent visit to South Africa, I struggled with reverse culture-shock. Yup, it’s a thing. I wasn’t sure how I felt about my home-country anymore. I felt weirdly unsafe and I was relieved to get back to Canada after 6 weeks away. It could have been due to other circumstances, but it sure left me in a weird place with South Africa and that’s when I wrote this:

A South African in Canada — How We Live:

I really want to try write more about our lifestyle and daily living so you can get a real idea of what life is like here. You can always read my travel posts, but that doesn’t always give you an idea of what life is really like here.
