Edmonton Favourite: Date Night At Woodwork

Who knew that the chef behind the popular Woodwork actually started out as a Food Truck Chef? Not me! We have been to Woodwork a few times before: Once as a group without a reservation so we had to sit at the bar but that wasn’t a problem, I love watching bartenders work their magic! Second time, was later, post-dinner, and we stopped in just for drinks. We chose each other’s cocktails based on the names and descriptions — and they were strong! This time, we were on a mini ‘staycation’ at the Fairmont Macdonald which is only a stone’s throw away from the trendy little spot so we thought it would be perfect for a date night too!

Decor & Vibe:

I am sort of obsessed with their cosy, caramel leather couch, epic wall-to-ceiling drinks shelf and their candle-lit corners to reel in the romance. THIS is how to create the right kinda mood on date night! It’s true, the place is rather dark, and small, but it never gets too rowdy. It’s just perfect.

Dinner:

Their menu (online menu not updated) is small, and divided into small and large plates with sides. We have shared dishes before, but this time we decided to order our own main dishes. Craig decided on the fresh, tomato-based seafood pasta, and I ultimately planned my meal based on my side order — the Brussels sprouts — to go with the Lamb Shank. The menu is thankfully forgiving to us annoyingly gluten-intolerants, so my side of barley risotto was without-hassle, subbed for potatoes.

You MUST try their: Brussels Sprouts!

The only thing we had to pick on was the let-down of a dessert at the end of the night. The smoked chocolate and raspberry creme brûlée sounded good in theory, but wasn’t our cup of tea!

Notes:

They’re closed on Wednesdays and you should definitely try book ahead, unless you’re rolling in late at night for a midnight snack. Come dressed warm-ish, a few people haven’t been too happy about the wind-chill that permeates the room when the door opens. Luckily, we were all cosy at the back of the narrow room, in full view of the open kitchen and woodfire.
