We’re total foodies! It’s hard to hide that. Often times, we plan an entire trip around restaurants we want to eat at (NOT joking, case in point, New York and all our previous Calgary Foodie Trips here, here, and here). Calgary is clearly one of our favourite foodie cities so when we get invited to try a new spot, we always jump at the opportunity! But when it’s Asian-inspired? Well, then we’ve hit the jackpot!
About Foreign Concept:
Calgary’s Foreign Concept is the Pan-Asian vision of award-winning chef Duncan Ly. The fusion restaurant open it’s doors in January 2017, on the popular 1st Street in Calgary, and shockingly, this was our first visit! Having made Avenue Calgary’s Top 25 Best Restaurants List, it features amongst some of our favourite foodie spots in our go-to weekend getaway city.
If you’re as into Asian food, like we are, you’ll be happy to know that their drinks menu has an Asian-twist too! Lucky Buddha Beer is one of Craig’s favourite Asian beers so if you’re feeling adventurous, give that one a try!
Also, they serve our very favourite champagne too — Tattinger — which you must try! The very same Champagne House we visited in France here!
We decided on cocktails after a glass of bubbly which went down almost too quickly. Before we knew it, we were on round two!
You can also pair your food with wines for a long, romantic dinner date!
Now what you really came for… the food!
What We Loved:
I mean, what didn’t we love?! Everything was ah-mazing! All the food was beautifully presented, the flavours are incredible and the menu is varied — so much so that it was difficult to choose!
It is recommended that the table share a few small plates and 1 or 2 large mains. We, of course, ordered way too much for the two of us and still somehow managed to finish it all (we did leave in a total food coma).
We started off with the House-made Napa Cabbage Kimchi; the Bulgogi Imperial Rolls and the Crispy Preserved Lemon Chicken — all amazing; all must tries!
For mains, Craig and I chose a dish each — mainly so he could eat all the gluten he wanted! (LOL) He had the Char Siu Pork and Foie Gras Steamed Buns (sadly, not GF) and I had the highly recommended Alberta Trout Cha Ca La Vong. Unlike most other gourmet restaurants, these portion sizes were worth their price!
There are so many more dishes that we’re dying to try, so of course, we will be back! We would love to try the Beef Tenderloin Fried Forbidden Rice and the 72Hr Sous Vide Beef Short Rib!
I’ll take Bulgogi Imperial Rolls to go!
Our server was so friendly and took the time to help me navigate the menu to accommodate my annoying gluten-free requirements. Needless to say, the service was impeccable, despite it being a relatively busy night for them.
Lucky for me, these Bulgogi Imperial Rolls were a yes in GF department and literally scrumptious! I am STILL craving them!
Thank you to Chef Duncan, Jessie and all the staff for having us! You’ll most definitely see us there again on our next visit to Calgary!
Want to Visit Too?
