HOW DO YOU GET TO EDMONTON?

If you’re arriving by air, you’ll be flying into Edmonton International Airport (YEG), located in Leduc just 30 minutes from Downtown Edmonton. If you have an early flight out, you might want to stay at the airport hotel. Here's a carry-on packing list for your flight.

HOW EASY IS IT TO GET AROUND?

If walking isn't your thing, you can use the Edmonton Transit (bus and LRT) or Uber. The light rail transit (LRT) provides fast and convenient service to 15 stops around the city. You can pay per trip or get a day pass.

TRANSPORT TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT?

You can book transport with SkyShuttle into Downtown Edmonton for $18 per adult and $10 per child. The Route 747 bus service from the airport to Century Park Station (where you can also catch the LRT). You can also use a taxi, or Uber, estimated $40-50 per trip.

OTHER WAYS OF GETTING AROUND?

A current popular form of getting around the city is the electric scooter rentals, which you can book through the Lime or Bird apps. You can also rent a bike or take a segway tour with River Valley Adventure Company.

IS THE CITY WALKABLE?

Once Downtown, most things are within walking distance except for the U of A Botanic Garden and the West Edmonton Mall. You can find information about our neighbourhood guides and walking tours for Downtown; 124th Street and the Old Strathcona area.

SHOULD WE RENT A CAR?

I would if you're comfortable driving in Canada.

The Things To Know Before You Go:

What is Edmonton known for?

The capital of Alberta, known as Canada's 'festival city', hosts over 50 festivals annually. Well-known attractions include West Edmonton Mall and the new Royal Alberta Museum. Edmonton is also the gateway to Jasper National Park & the Canadian Rockies.

WHERE ELSE SHOULD I VISIT IN ALBERTA?

If you'd like to extend your stay, you could road-trip 3 hours or fly 45 minutes to the neighbouring Albertan city (and our new home), Calgary. You should also consider visiting Banff (5 hour drive) and Jasper National Park (4 hour drive).

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?

There is something to do in every season so it depend's on what you enjoy. Edmonton's weather is the best during the late Spring (May) and Summer (June to August), when it's warm and the days are longer because the sun doesn’t set until 10 p.m, which means more time to explore.

ACE COFFEE ROASTERS

Edmonton's food scene is killing it right now and everyone's noticing, so you must make time to try out some of our local favourites. We've started off by ranking our top 5 for each meal of the day, but we also share our favourites according to area and budget. Just click the filters accordingly.

What is the weather like in Edmonton?

In June, summer temperatures range between 20°C to 30°C with up to 17 hours of daylight per day. In the winter, with typical temperatures ranging between -5°C to -15°C. Snowfall can happen as early as November and as late as March.

My Favourite Stores To
Buy Baby Clothes

To be honest, prior to having a baby I had never shopped at the Gap! But since having Riley, I've found some many good quality pieces and almost always on sale.

My favourite of them all, but not the cheapest. I usually shop pre-season during sales and create Pinterest boards with my purchases for each age group. That way, I know what I have when I'm shopping in advance but I can also visually see what I still need, or whether items will fit with everything else I have bought.

Old Navy has been a favourite to buy packs of zippered footed sleepers since newborn days but they also have cute tops and even this sherpa vest! Plus, I love that they offer things like Old Navy Cash to use on future purchases.

I usually update this Pinterest board with all my finds.

If you've been following for a while, you'll know I'm a sale-shopper (see this post) and love to snag a bargain! We're pretty serious about our budget and shopping intentionally so we plan ahead, pre-buy for future seasons and use all our favourite tricks to save money. These are the stores we love to shop at for Riley!

The Baby Toys
We've Loved So Far

We're trying to keep the toys at a minimum, buying only things that are age appropriate but that also promote open-ended play.  These are our favourites so far, in addition to our Lovevery Play Kits:

0 - 3 MONTHS

THE LOVEVERY PLAY GYM

THE SENSORY STRANDS (ADD ON)

THE LOVEVERY CONTRAST CARDS

HIGH CONTRAST CARDS

We used this play gym daily from newborn all the way to 9 months.

High-contrast images with varying pattern complexity help develop and strengthen your baby's vision

3 - 6 MONTHS

MUSHIE STACKING CUPS

THE LOVEVERY PLAY KIT SET

HAPE BABY PIANO

Stacking cups are fun for babes to knock over or to play with in the bath. The Lovevery set is my favourite because they make a noise when they knock / bang together.

This piano was a hit from 6 months old and still is.

6 - 9 MONTHS

THAT'S NOT MY christmas BOOK SET

THAT'S NOT MY BUNNY BOOK

THE EXPLORER PLAY KIT

We got these Touchy-feely books as hand-me-downs and they've been really great for keeping Riley still for a few minutes!

This Play Kit has so many fun things to play with that I haven't found 'equivalents' for. The stacking cups and containers are a hit.

HERE'S HOW WE DID IT

I found the best way to babyproof was in phases, as our baby showed us what was necessary to baby-proof. That meant almost daily Amazon orders for us at one stage.  Our goal was to create safe spaces in our living room, kitchen, and nursery for our babe to explore.

Babyproofing: How To Make Your Home Safe For Your Baby

COVER ELECTRICAL OUTLETS

COVER OUTLETS IN USE

CONCEAL ANY LOOSE CORDS

LOCK CABINETS WITH CHEMICALS

LOCK TOILETS / DROWN HAZARDS

ANCHOR HEAVY FURNITURE

REPLACE DOOR STOPPERS

LOWER CRIB + PLAYARD

INSTALL BABY GATES BY STAIRS

GET AN anti-slip bath mat

PHASE 2: PULLING UP

PHASE 1: CRAWLING

PHASE 3: WALKERS

Install BLIND cord

Between 6-9 months, depending on how soon your babe is mobile, you'll want to start doing these things to babyproof the low levels. Get on all fours and look for hazards.

Within a month of crawling you'll probably notice your baby start pulling up on things and then cruising. That's when you'll want to start
